How to play 101 Okey
- The tiles
- 106 tiles: numbers 1 to 13 in four colors, two of each, plus two false jokers. Four players. Everyone gets 21 tiles and the dealer 22. A tile is turned face up as the indicator; the next number in the same color is the okey (the joker) for that hand.
- Opening
- To put tiles down for the first time, your sets must add up to at least 101 points. A set is a run in one color (5-6-7 red) or the same number in different colors (8 red, 8 blue, 8 black). You can also open with five pairs.
- Playing
- Draw a tile, then discard one. Once you have opened you can add tiles to your sets and to other players’ sets. The first player to get rid of every tile finishes the hand.
- Scoring a hand (common rules)
- The player who finishes gets −101. Everyone else adds up the tiles left in their hand. A player who never opened gets 202. Finishing with the okey, or all at once without opening before, usually doubles everything: −202 for the winner, the others ×2. Players who opened with pairs often pay double, and discarding a tile that fits a set on the table costs 101.
- Winning
- Play an agreed number of hands, often 9 or 11. The lowest total wins.
House rules differ from table to table. Agree on doubles and penalties before the first hand.
Game night, Turkish style
In Turkey, 101 is the game of long evenings at home: four friends, a tile rack each, tea glasses refilled without asking, and something good to eat between hands. We made this scoreboard so nobody has to keep score on a napkin.
